Fibers to sense airplane vibrations

Japanese researchers have developed sensors that use fibre optics to measure vibration.

The optical fibers are extremely thin and use the flexibility and the light leakage to measure acceleration or vibration.

The device uses 1550 nm diode lasers. Any bending or vibration of the optical fibers is detected by optoelectronic transformers that analyze the light to determine any deviation from the normal signal.
