The Acoustical Society of New Zealand 2021 Conference – The Sound of a Changing World

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

MARION BURGESS will present our first conference keynote session, with further keynote presentations by JUDGE KIRKPATRICK and PROFESSOR PETER THORNE.

MARION BURGESS is a distinguished acoustician, with over 40 years of broad experience in many aspects of acoustics including building, environmental and occupational noise measurement, assessments, control and research. Based in Australia, she works at the Canberra campus of the University of New South Wales and presents specialist classes in occupational and environmental acoustics to undergraduate and post graduate students. She is a member of several relevant Standards Australia committees and is an active member of the Australian Acoustical Society, along with being the current chief editor of its Journal.  She regularly participates in international conferences and was the Chair of the International Congress in Acoustics held in Sydney in 2010.  She is currently the Past President of the International Commission for Acoustics and is also the President of the International Institute for Noise Control Engineering.

JUDGE D. A. KIRKPATRICK, prior to his appointment to the Court in February 2014, had been a Barrister sole since July 2004. He specialised in administrative and public law generally, and resource management law in particular. He appeared regularly before consent authorities, the Environment Court, and the High Court. He also appeared before the Court of Appeal, the Privy Council, and the Supreme Court. From 1994 to 2004 Judge Kirkpatrick was a partner in the Local Government and Environment practice area of Simpson Grierson. In that role he was the primary legal advisor to a number of local authorities in the Auckland region in regard to public administration, the regulation of public utilities and resource management. He has also acted for a wide range of corporate clients, incorporated societies and individuals in those fields. In 2008-09 he acted as counsel assisting the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance.
Judge Kirkpatrick is a contributing author of the chapter ‘Land Use and Subdivision – Resource Consent Procedures, Designations and Appeals’ in Environmental and Resource Management Law, and was appointed Head of the New Zealand Environment Court in July 2020.

PROFESSOR PETER R. THORNE is an expert in diseases of the inner ear and the effects of noise and consequences of ageing on the auditory system.
Professor Thorne has a joint appointment in the Section of Audiology and Department of Physiology at the University of Auckland. He is a Director of the Eisdell Moore Centre and Co-Director of Brain Research New Zealand.
Professor Thorne completed his PhD at the University of Auckland and post-doctoral studies at the University of Auckland and at the Kresge Hearing Research Institute, University of Michigan. His research is in the area of sensory neurobiology particularly inner ear homeostasis and the influence of noise exposure and ageing on hearing. He is the Chairman of the National Foundation for the Deaf and is on the Board of the Deafness Research Foundation.  He was one of lead advocates for the establishment of Newborn Hearing Screening through Project HIEDI (Hearing Impairment and Early Detection and Intervention).
In 2009, Professor Thorne was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to audiology and auditory neuroscience.
