Ulf Sanberg and Jerzy Ejsmont have released a new reference book covering all the aspects of tyre and road noise. The cost is $US230 or $E190 and is available from Informex web site.

Prof Fastl and Prof Zwicker have released an updated version of their popular 1999 book on psychoacoustics called Psychoacoustics: Facts and Models . This book is a "must have" for those interested in psychoacoustics.

Analog Device has released its third generation of their SHARC digital signal processors that are designed specifically for sound processing in vehicle and consumer electronics.

Endevco have a 220 page book called, 'The Handbook of Dynamic Force, Pressure, and Acceleration Measurement', by Patrick L. Walter, from the Texas Christian University, that can be downloaded for free, upon registration.

World Scientific publishers have a new journal - The International Journal of Stability and Dynamics.

A new book by Eugene Rivin, published by ASME, titled "Passive Vibration Isolation", covers the necessary techniques to successfully design vibration isolation systems.

A new book called, "Fundamentals of Rotating Machinery Diagnostics" has been released by ASME, written by Donald Bently, Charles Hatch and edited by Bob Grissom. The book covers the basics and some advanced topics of using measured vibration to diagnose machinery faults. Several details case studies are included.

Michael Norton, from the University of Western Australia, will have the 2nd edition of his book 'Fundamentals of Noise and Vibration Analysis for Engineers', available in May 2003. The book has been updated with the latest developments in the field of vibrations and acoustics.

Greg Swift, of Los Alamos National Laboratories has released a book on thermoacoustics. The book is available to ASA members for $US50 and $US70 for non-members.

JBL a loudspeaker manufacturer have release a 450 page book titled, "JBL Audio Engineering for Sound Reinforcement," which covers all aspects of sound reinforcement from audio basics, system design, and DSP.

Elsevier Science has acquired Harcourt, and is merging the Academic Press journals (e.g. Journal of Sound and Vibration) from the IDEAL web site into its ScienceDirect web site. Read the full notice on their web site.

The American Institute of Physics (AIP), publishers of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, have a storage area for files to supplement the published journal papers. Files such as movies, colour figures, animations, sounds can be submitted to the site.

SKF, a bearing manufacturer have released a handbook (more than 200 pages) to help designers of paper manufacturing machines. It has information on their latest CARB bearings (a really interesting new development in bearing design that allows misalignment and axial adjustment), maintenance issues, rebuilding bearings, condition monitoring, bearing recommendations for various installations, and others.

There are a number of great on-line book retailers. Some are better than others. As with most businesses, it is mainly the brand-name recognised ones that people often buy from. However, if you are looking to buy a book you might like to consider these alternatives that sell either new or used books(*)

I found that walmart.com have some really cheap books on acoustics.... for example, Beranek and Ver, Engineering Noise Control which sells for $225 just about everywhere I looked, they have it for $202... Most books look like they are 10% off, some are 20% off.

Multi-Science publishers have made some of their journals available online for free. It is worth looking into while it lasts.
